I had the pleasure to stay at Simsim Guesthouse for 3 weeks and I enjoyed every second of it.
After having seen only Tel Aviv before arriving in Nazareth, the town was my first real look into the different cultures and people that make Israel such an interesting and diverse country. Staying in Nazareth and Simsim in particular gives you the unique opportunity to experience all the various aspects to really get to know a country and its people. I got to know the political situation not only out from textbooks but from the people itself, I made real hummus from scratch and witnessed a tour through a christian college by a nun herself. You will make experiences that help you understand the country and that were a great foundation for my next few weeks of travelling in Israel.
Silke and Sami want you to enjoy your stay – and you can really sense that. You never feel bad about not understanding a task the first time.
They are also incredibly good at giving you advice on what to do in the Galilee, how to get there, where to stay, what to expect… The whole area around Nazareth has a lot of things to offer. I especially recommend hiking the Jesus Trail. I gives you a good insight into Galilee’s landscape and the different people that live there.
You will sleep in a separate room in the hostel which is quiet, cool and gives you the opportunity to be for yourself if you feel like that.
Breakfast is fantastic. Everyday fresh vegetables, labanee and date juice that you can enjoy on the the beautiful rooftop terrace.
The work at Simsim itself is easy and often fun and rewarding. The morning shift consists of preparing breakfast and checking if the hostel is clean. In the afternoon shift you check in guests and show presence at the guesthouse. I never realized how fun it can be to give guests advice about places to see or even just bus timetables. Apart from that you will of course spend a lot of time with the guests, meet interesting and fun people and make tons of new friends. We often cooked dinner together with the whole hostel or went out for a drink in the evening. You will never feel lonely or bored – also because you’re not volunteering alone.
Silke and Sami, I want to thank you for your hospitality and the great time I had in Nazareth.
