Katleen (Nov.2015)

After spending a month in Jordan, I wanted to discover Israel. Instead of travelling around, I preferred to stay on one place and discover the region and his residents. Most people ask me, why Nazareth? It was in fact like choosing a book by his cover or let us call it destiny. I was searching for a hostel to volunteer in and ended up on the site of simsim. The pictures got me, but not as with most books, I was not disappointed in my choice.

After crossing the border and staying in modern towns Eilat and Tel Aviv, I was happy to enter the Old City of Nazareth. A picturesque place I would call my home for three weeks. The market place with surrounding narrow streets and shops are so nice to stroll in. Of course I was glad to discover that simsim was in one of those authentic streets. I immediately felt in love with their two old houses and especially the terrace in the guesthouse, so charming.

Sami and Silke are the perfect hosts, with their helpfulness and knowledge you will for sure enjoy your stay in Nazareth. It was my first experience to work in a guesthouse and I liked it. Preparing breakfast, making the beds, welcoming the guests… Sami is passionate about Nazareth, unfortunately a lot of people think there’s not a lot to do in this little town. Well, they should have stayed longer to see all the opportunities of Nazareth. The nights are not so lively as Tel Aviv of course, but staying at the backpackersplace give you a chance to get to know the guests better and enjoying nice evenings together. During the day I loved to spend my free time wandering around the city, visiting the churches, spicy and coffeeshops and other nice places as the mount Precipice, but most of all I liked talking with the locals. The people in Nazareth are very welcoming and always open for a chat. Don’t forget to pass by Abu Ashraf place, not only his pancakes and interior, but also the man himself is memorable. Sami and Silke also know a lot of interesting people and have great projects in mind. It’s inspiring to meet a couple who is so active in their own town and believe in his future.

Besides this, Nazareth is a good place to chill out while travelling and exploring the surrounding. With the bus you can visit a lot from Nazareth, although I have to admit that renting a car in Israel is not a bad idea… For a lot of sites you still have to walk a few kilometers, but that’s because my interest field is archeology. I really enjoyed my trip to Caesarea. I slept one night in the Juha’s Guesthouse in Jisr az-Zarqa (which I recommend) and from this town I walked on the beach towards the archaeological park Caesarea, the sea on one side and a Roman aqueduct on the other, so perfect. Other places who are (easy) to reach and which I visited are the beautiful Zippori and Akko (not to miss!), Beit She’arim (I was really impressed to see this archaeological site), Megiddo, Haifa, Cana and Tiberias with the sea of Galilee (Magdala, Taghba, Capernaum). At the end I even made a trip to Jenin and Sebastya and realized even more I really have to come back exploring the Westbank. Not only the landscape and sites are interesting to discover also the political situation in Israel/Palestine is a topic to reflect on and think about.

Three weeks were too short, I miss the Arabic liveliness, the delicious food, Sami’s temperamental way of speaking and of course my lovely roommate, the other volunteer Oksana. Sami and Silke, thank you so much for your hospitality and making my stay in Nazareth unforgettable!
